Raai Laxmi, who is gearing up for the release of her Bollywood debut Julie 2, is on cloud nine. And why not! The teaser of the film that also happens to be her 50th has received an overwhelming response with over 5 million views in less than a week. The actress speaks to us about the film, her 12-year-long career and more.
Raai Laxmi opens up about the film that has been the talk of the town ever since its teaser released. Without mincing words, she says, "The teaser has received a mixed response. We have received both positive and negative reactions. However, I should say that people in the north have welcomed it and have lauded it for the confidence with which we’ve done it. Julie 2 is not merely about glamour and skin show. Of course, it is a big part of it but at no point have we crossed the line. The movie has a strong content and has a lot of scope for performance."
Talking about her role, she says it was quite a challenge. "I play a naïve girl who becomes a successful actress. What she goes through in the process before and after stardom is what the story is all about. An actress can adapt herself to play any role, but to play an actress on screen is challenging and at the same time exciting. It’s also special because I’ve had to shoulder the film," she adds.
Having made her debut into film industry with Karka Kasadara in 2005, Laxmi says that she has no regrets when she looks back at her career. "Fifty films in 12 years is something that I am proud of. I have seen ups and downs in my career and have learnt and bounced back from my lowest phases," says the actress.
Having played both lead and supporting roles in films of leading directors like Jeeva, Murugadoss, Venkat Prabhu and Sundar C, among others, does she feel she has got her due in the industry? "Not really. I’ve wondered why many a time. Despite having done myriad roles including negative characters, actresses are always rated based on glamour. We need to be respected for our talent," she remarks.
Raai Laxmi, who has amassed a loyal fan base in south, was last seen in Sowkarpettai, that released two years ago. Has she shifted her focus away from Tamil or south Indian movies? "How can I forget south Indian movies? I am what I am because of the southern film industry. The fans have always showered their love." she replies.
Speaking about her upcoming projects, "I have signed a couple of projects in Malayalam and Tamil. They’re both interesting scripts and I hope to continue to get the opportunity to explore and experiment with good roles in films irrespective of the language." She concludes.
Julie 2, directed by Deepak Shivdasani, the film is all slated for an October release.
