As we sit for a conversation with the beautiful Bhanupriya, you can’t help but notice how gracefully she’s aged. But, apart from the greys and a wrinkle here and there, the veteran in her takes a backseat when you hear her evergreen voice. She speaks with the enthusiasm and honesty of a child.
How have things changed in the industry for female actors over time? “Even during my days as a heroine, there were good stories that were written for female stars. They were given their due, and now the industry has further opened up with stories like Magalir Mattum,” she replies.
In Magalir Mattum , Bhanupriya plays the role of a housewife. How different is the character from her real-life persona? “In real life, while I cook and do my daily chores, I also meet people I’m close to and spend time with them. But in Magalir Mattum , I play a housewife whose entire life is restricted to her daily ‘duties’. She also gets constantly yelled at by her husband. That doesn’t happen to me normally. So, it was different,” she laughs.
In her heyday, Bhanupriya was not only known for portraying powerful characters, but also someone who could pull off comedy effortlessly. Be it her role in Azhagan, Kshatriyan or Magudam among others, she was lauded for her versatility. Will we see her doing comedy in Magalir Mattum as well? “It has quite a few comic scenes in it. But they weren’t specifically written. Whatever happened on the shoot was captured and became a part of the film. My co-stars were a delight to work with. It was like one big family,” she muses.
The actress adds that she is looking forward to do a dance-based film. “I haven’t lost touch with dance. I practise regularly. I will do a dance film if producers come forward.” she signs off.
