Hara Hara Mahadev Ki, an adult comedy, something that is a rarity for the Tamil audiences, is all set for release. And an interaction with the team was high on humour, perhaps a sign of what the viewer can expect on screen. Director Santhosh P Jayakumar, the film’s lead Gautham Karthik, and actor Karunakaran, had us in splits from the word go. “You will laugh out loud if I reveal my character. It’s a never-seen-before role in Tamil cinema,” said Karunakaran without divulging much.
We were then joined by leading lady Nikki Galrani who was accompanied by her puppy. When asked about carrying her pet for the interview, she said, “There’s no one to take care of King Kong at my place. That’s why I brought him along me.” Gautham Karthik seemed quite comfortable with King Kong. “He’s a good boy,” he added.
The excitement on Gautham Karthik’s face was quite evident, considering the actor has achieved consecutive successes with films like Rangoon and Ivan Thanthiran. But an adult comedy? “This is one of the genres I’ve always wanted to explore. Even my next film is an adult comedy, but I do have films in other genres as well. So, I don’t think I will be stereotyped,” he explained.
When asked, what was his father, veteran actor Karthik’s reaction was after watching the film, he said, “Dad liked the film and said it has come out well and was happy for us.” Adult comedies can be quite tricky. Earlier attempts in this genre, albeit a few, have backfired and criticised for being too vulgar.
However, director Santhosh ensured that there will be no reason for the audience to hate this film. “We’ve tried to break the notion that adult comedies are all sexual. The movie will be like a conversation among friends in a group. Nothing is forced. Also, we were clear about the audience we wanted to cater to and happy with being given an ‘A’ certificate,” he said. Agreeing with her director, Nikki said, “To me, this film is as important as any other film. It has grabbed a lot of attention because of its uniqueness. We all have worked on it with a lot of dedication. I don’t think this will affect my career in the long run.”
Towards the end, we couldn’t help but prod Karunakaran about his character. “Okay, I play a guy who makes a living filling buckets by pumping water. Have you ever come across such a role in Tamil cinema before?,” he finished before sharing a good laugh with his team.
