As Karthi’s 'Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru', gears up for release this week, November 17, it’s director H Vinoth says that he had tracked the film’s storyline for close to 16 years. Bankrolled by Dream Warrior Pictures, the film also stars Rakul Preet Singh as the female lead.
As Karthi’s Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru , gears up for release this week, it’s director H Vinoth says that he had tracked the film’s storyline for close to 16 years. “I am an avid reader of newspapers. So back in the 90s, I remember reading about a criminal case and it tickled my curiosity. Years later, I stumbled upon a snippet that was featured in the Varalaatru Suvadugal column in Daily Thanthi. I found it interesting and Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru happened,” Vinoth told us.
The director then sought the help of a former police commissioner to develop the story. “It wasn’t an easy task, it took three months for me to convince him that I would not be misusing the information that he gave me. So, after three months, when he asked me to meet him, I prepared over 40 questions and told the police officer that it would be fine with me even if he replied in monosyllables,” he said.
Vinoth said there were as many as 110 police officials involved in the real-life operation. “This was later revealed to me by one of the team members. He even provided me with five volumes of the case history. I read it all during a bus travel to my hometown which took all of four hours,”he said.
Given the enormity of the case, Vinoth had at one point of time almost shelved the story idea. “The story involved cultural and religious sensibilities and I was sceptical about it. However, people do not know about the life of policemen. We have a very negative perception about them and I wanted to break that image with Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru,” he added.
When asked how the movie would be different from the 200 odd other cop films in Tamil, he said, “We have seen cops going on a mission, arresting people and providing the heroics. Haven’t we? But there are certain real-life police procedures to be followed. One needs to get approvals from the police top brass before the men on the ground plan an operation. Say like fund allocation and even petrol allowance. We take the audience through all these processes. After watching Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru, the audience will take almost 10 days to pour over what they saw on screen. The movie is straight out of a real-life incident but has fictional elements to it.”
Vinoth faced a bigger challenge prior to the film’s shoot. “Since the story is set in the 90’s, I first had to ensure that the film was shot in a place that had no 4G towers. Luckily, the story happens in Rajasthan and we shot the film in the deserts of Rajasthan and Jaisalmer. Else, I would have gone somewhere to Ramnad to shoot the film,” he quipped.
Vinoth said that if he hadn’t made a movie about this case, he still would have made a documentary. “It is because I want to convey to people the truth through my films. And Theeran Athigaaram Ondru is in pursuit of that goal.” He concludes.
