Actor Santhanam, in a candid conversation with us, speaks about his upcoming film 'Sakka Podu Podu Raja', which also marks his best friend Simbu’s debut as a composer, the recent assault case against him, and his political ambitions.
Santhanam arrives on time for the interview and greets us with a cheerful smile, much like the broad grin he sports during his famous wedding scene in Boss Engira Baskaran. The excitement in his voice is palpable as he speaks about his upcoming film Sakka Podu Podu Raja, which is up for a release on December 22. “It will be a complete commercial entertainer. So far, I have played the lead in films that were in the horror and comedy genres. But Sakka Podu Podu Raja will be a complete package, which has something for every viewer.”
The movie will release along with Sivakarthikeyan’s Velaikkaran. Talking about locking horns with Sivakarthikeyan at the box office, he says, “The competition is healthy and if both films end up making money at the ticket counter, it’s good news for the industry.”
The actor who started doing lead roles with Inimey Ippadithaan, says that though comedy is his forte, he will be seen across genres in the future. “My upcoming films Server Sundaram, which is all set to release soon, is about a chef, while my film with Selvaraghavan, Mannavan Vanthaanadi, is a romantic film. However, both these films will have my style of comedy that the audience has always appreciated me for,” he says.
The movie also marks Simbu’s debut as a music director, who was instrumental in Santhanam’s film debut with Manmadhan in 2004. “He is my godfather when it comes to my cinema career. I was surprised to see his versatility even when he was a child artiste. I am fortunate to have him compose music for my film. He may go on to give chartbusters as a composer in the future. I will be happy that it all started with my film,” he muses.
His best friends from the industry and his co-stars Arya, Vishal and Udhayanidhi, in recent interviews, have said that they miss having Santhanam in their films. “Arya called me to say that he finds it uncomfortable to share screen space with other comedians and actors, and wants me to be a part of his film. During Ippadai Vellum’s premiere, mudhalaali (how he fondly refers to Udhayanidhi) and I were wondering if it’s about time, he and I collaborated again. Let’s hope we have scripts that facilitate that.”
While his bestie Vishal has entered politics, we ask if he has any political ambitions. “It’s Vishal’s personal decision and he believes he can do something for the welfare of the people. However, there have been people, who are saying that actors should not enter politics. They are just being unfair. Moreover, I don’t think I will enter politics any time soon. When I believe I can do something through that medium, I will for sure,” he adds.
Talking about the controversy in which the actor was accused of assaulting an advocate, he says, “I’m just like any other normal person you see on the road. I deal with 100 persons and there will be some misunderstanding somewhere. Just because I am a star, things were manipulated.”
As the conversation veers towards his friends, we ask him when Vishal, Arya, and Simbu, who are still ‘single’ will tie the knot. “Ivanuga imsai thaanga mudiyala (I cannot stand their torture). These guys have been roaming around claiming that they are single. I am going to make them sit on the same stage and preside over their wedding in 2018,” he concludes.
