says Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi, who is quite excited about her second film, Kaali, which stars Vijay Antony in never-seen-before role
Would love to work with Udhay some day says Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi, who is quite excited about her second film, Kaali, which stars Vijay Antony in never-seen-before role
After nearly four years, director and wife of Udhayanidhi Stalin, Kiruthiga is all set to make a comeback with Kaali . While her debut film Vanakkam Chennai was a feel-good entertainer, she says that her second outing will be diametrically opposite “I started writing my second script without setting any limitation for myself or the storyline. But only during the shoot did I realise how complicated it was to for me to transform my idea for the big screen. It’ll be in stark contrast to my debut film, Vanakkam Chennai ,” says Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi.
She says the four-year break between the films wasn’t a conscious decision. “It wasn’t planned. My second project took a lot of time to take offdue to various reasons and now in retrospect, I believe that it all happened for a reason. I took some time to shape my script as well. When Vijay Antony heard it, he liked the script, and immediately agreed to produce as well.” Talking to us about the film, she says, “ Kaali is an action family drama that has a bit of everything in it. It has a lot of emotions that will easily connect with the audience.
The film talks about different forms of love and relationships. You will get to see Vijay Antony in a different avatar. He has never attempted a role like this before. Anjali, Sunaina, Shilpa Manjunath, Amritha, Yogi Babu, Madhusudan, Nassar and Jayaprakash — everyone in the film has given their best and elevated the script.” Initially, there were rumours that she will be teaming up with STR for her second outing. She says, “I was supposed to do the film with Simbu, fortunately or unfortunately, it didn’t happen. Sometimes, the wait in the film industry can be longer than you expect.
When you get a producer who is interested in backing your film, it is difficult to find an actor, and there are times when you have the actor on board, but it’s difficult to find a good producer. I am lucky that I got a producer/actor who could envision Kaali the way I did.” On working with Vijay Antony, she says, “I would say Kaali is not just one person’s effort, it’s a team effort. Vijay Antony has been involved in the scripting process throughout pre-production. Ever since we started sharing a professional relationship, both of us were open to arguments, discussions and rewrites.
We were clear in what we were doing.” Ask her if she has ever thought of working with her husband, Udhayanidhi , she says, “I would love to work with him in future. It would be incredibly fun to make him dance to my tunes on the sets as I don’t have that power at home (smiles).”
Kiruthiga also says that filmmaking was never on the agenda and it happened by chance. “I never had the idea of becoming a filmmaker when I was young. My love for it started only after I gave birth to my first child. I had a lot of time on hand, and writing eventually became my hobby. I have done short films as part of college projects, and the entire process of it has always excited me. And that’s how Vanakkam Chennai happened.” On her upcoming projects, she says, “During my four-year break, I managed to complete more than two scripts. I will zero in on one more script soon as it excites me whenever I revisit it. In fact, it will easily connect with most of the women and they can’t help but fall in love with the story.”
