As you enter Chandran’s house in Thiruvanmiyur, there is this feeling of watching a light-hearted family drama as his father receives us, while his mom is busy cooking for them. Chandran and Anjana greet us and their little niece Riya joins them. Chandran and Anjana, who fondly call each other ‘Baby’, tied the knot in 2016, after knowing each other for three years.
Chandran recalls the first time he met Anjana and says, “I waved at her in our office and she didn’t even bother to look at me. I thought this girl was being rude.” Anjana though had her own reasons and says that she was in her own zone. “It wasn’t intentional. I was in my own zone and didn’t notice him waving at me. However, I was hosting Edison Awards in 2014 and he won the award for the Best Debut Actor for Kayal. Before taking the stage, he shook hands with all the anchors present there and that impressed me,” she says as Chandran smiles.
The couple says that they have a group of mutual friends and that got them closer. “We used to hang out together and we both are very talkative. That brought us closer to each other.”
Talking about who confessed the love first, Chandran says, “Endha kaalathula ponnunga modhala sollirukaanga (Girls never confess their love first). So, I was the one who proposed. And I knew she would accept because I knew she liked me.”
Anjana says that their love story isn’t a cliched one like we get to see in movies. “We got along well and we liked each other. So, both of us knew it was coming. We were quite comfortable with each other. Though I don’t want to reveal how he proposed to me, I still accepted,” she laughs.
Later, they got married in Thirumeeyachur, a village near Kumbakkonam last year. “That’s my amma’s (referring to her mother-in-law) favourite temple. We didn’t have much time, so things were done in a hasty manner. There were no hair and makeup artists or stylists. We wanted our marriage to be a simple affair,” says Anjana.
“I wanted my wedding to be in a village. We wanted it to be a family affair with less number of people. My mom has nine siblings, all of them above 70. So, we had to take that into consideration. Hence, we called all of them and there were close to around 150 people in the temple. Anjana had to change four different sarees for rituals. There was a petty shop opposite the temple and a small house behind it. She changed her clothes there. Later we invited people from the industry and hosted a reception in Chennai,” says Chandran.
With both of them hailing from the media, they say that they always try to strike a balance and make up for the time they have missed being with each other. “If I shoot continuously for three months, I am available for the next three months. Anjana’s show is for one hour a day. So, even if I shoot in Chennai, I make it a point to come home for dinner,” says Chandran.
Anjana bursts out laughing. “I’m still learning how to cook. I only make Maggi for him. So, when appa and amma are not in town, he is the one who cooks,” she winks. “I can manage some cooking. I was in Delhi for a couple of years and that’s when I learnt cooking. I always ask her, ‘Yen ma namma kozhandhaikaavadhu samaipiya illa adhukum Maggi dhana (Would you at least make something for our kid or will it be the same Maggi that you serve me).”
When Chandran does most of the talking, we ask Anjana how she talks so much in television and less at home. “Of course, I am the talkative one. But you know what? While Chandran is very quiet outside, he’s completely different at home. We have had fights and he doesn’t even talk. He walks down the stairs and disappears for some time.”
Talking about their Valentine’s Day gift, Chandran says, “I don’t believe in all that. I love simple accessories like watches and shades. She is the one who gifts me. I receive it and wish her back,” he laughs. “He gets something for himself when I buy something for me. I bought a saree for Rs. 20,000,” says Anjana and Chandran interrupts. “How could she buy something just for herself with such a big amount. So, I bought a watch for 20,000.” Is Varalakshmi Vratam the only event in the house where Chandran doesn’t buy something for himself? “No, even then I bought a kurta,” he laughs.
Anjana says that she is very emotional and Chandran is a practical person. “He is someone who uses hand sanitizer at restaurants after touching the menu card, while I will be waiting for food starving,” she says. “Anjana you have no idea. Menu card is the most unhygienic thing in a restaurant. So, I advise everybody to follow the same,” he says.
Apart from being talkative, both are avid travellers as well. “We don’t plan our road trips. Last time, we dropped our parents after visiting a temple, we left for Coorg. We didn’t even book hotels. Our travels are impromptu.”
When it comes to decision makings, Anjana says, “We discuss everything with our entire family present around the dinner table. Appa ensures that even Riya is a part of the conversation.”
As we come to the end of the conversation, Anjana tells us ‘why don’t you ask about Chandran’s ex girlfriends’? He laughs, “Even a couple of days ago, at an event she met my ex girlfriend’s classmate.” Anjana tells us, “He has even brought a couple of them home and bought a silk saree for one of them and the next week he came home crying that the girl broke up with him.” Chandran’s parents join us and say, “We have a lot of such stories to tell you.”
On a concluding note, the couple has a message to say, “There will be fights and misunderstandings. How we get back to our better half is what matters,” they sign off.
