Actress Lupita Nyong’o talks about playing Nakia in the recently-released 'Black Panther', that went on to become a blockbuster in India.
Lupita Nyong’o of Star Wars and The Jungle Book fame, says that she was in look-out for powerful roles, and is happy to have landed in the role of Nakia in the recently-released Marvel movie, Black Panther.
“It was very exciting. In this film, we have four women, they are all not powerful in the same way but they are all powerful. Nakia is an undercover spy; her power is subtle and observational. She is ferocious when she needs to be. Okoye, the general is more overtly powerful. She is a ruler of an army, too. On the whole, It’s all about being allowed to realise your full potential, no matter what sex you belong to,” she says.
Talking about finding herself in the middle of a huge talent pool, she says, “It was incredible. I really love the cast, we got along well throughout the shoot. There’s nothing as awful as like going to work and dreading seeing some people. I can very confidently say I never had that feeling. We worked for hours together, and we partied, too. Work hard, play hard and we tried new things together. We went to this Nigerian restaurant and everybody tried tasting something new there. I love Nigerian food and it was lovely to introduce it to people like Angela Basette (Storm) and other folks. It was a communal kind of environment where we really admired each others work.”
Lupita also has a message for her fans in India. “Don’t believe the hype, just go see it for yourself. You will like it if you go in there not expecting anything in particular,” she concludes.
