Sonu Sood, who stepped into his 20th year in films recently, spoke to us in the sidelines of the martial arts blockbuster films being aired on Sony Pix, said that he was destined to start his career from the south. “It’s really surprising that it has been two decades, it just seems like yesterday. I came from Punjab to pursue my dreams and make my parents proud just waiting for that one film to happen and it happened and many more followed.”
Sonu admitted that it took some time for him to realise and choose the right content. “After doing about 40 films, I realised it is very important to choose the right roles and industries for your films to reach the fans, in remote villages across Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Not only the characters I chose had a positive impact on my career, but also the way how the audience embraced them. I think it has been a great journey and looking forward to a lot more.”
Kung Fu Yoga, in which he shared screen space with Jackie Chan was Sonu’s only release last year. However, Sonu says that the film will be close to his heart forever. “Working with Jackie Chan was very special, I have been a huge fan of his. As a kid, I used to watch his movies and see him performing stunts and today when I have done a movie with him and spent one year and travelled along the globe with him I genuinely feel that I am blessed. One needs to have a disciplined lifestyle even to learn stunt from him and his team. We had to wake up at 5am followed by a rigorous workout.”
Talking about the on-location experience, he said, “Off the camera, Jackie Chan is one of the humblest guys I have come across. He used to serve and even feed everyone on the sets from the spot boys to the director to the actors. He not only treated everyone equal, but also made them feel special.”
Sonu will be next seen in the epic Hindi film Manikarnika and his role of Sadashiv has already created a huge anticipation among movie buffs. “My character of Sadashiv will be one of the most unique roles in my career of almost 90 films. Having shot for the film, I can say that people will remember Sadashiv for a long time.” The actor has also completed shooting for yet another epic film Kurukshetra in Kannada.
This film marks his comeback in the language after seven years. “The film was shot originally in Canada, I am playing Arjun and it has huge ensemble of stars. I’m excited for the film and looking forward to its theatrical release,” said Sonu.
Apart from his screen presence, the actor has been an epitome of fitness. He gets going once he starts talking about his fitness regime. “I was glued to fitness from my college days, I used to hit the gym on a regular basis, some times even in the middle of the night. When I came to Mumbai, I had the fit body that the industry required. It is not for any film but it is an addiction and I thoroughly enjoy working out in a gym every day,” he concluded.
