The latest buzz in kollywood is that Kamal Haasan-Shankar’s magnum opus Indian 2 has been dropped as Lyca Productions has backed off from the project
The sequel to Kamal Haasan’s 1996 blockbuster Indian was announced by Lyca on his birthday last year. The film started rolling in the second week of January with Kamal Haasan, Kajal Aggarwal, Shankar and Anirudh Ravichander officially on board for the project. After four days of shooting in Chennai, the film did not progress. While it was reported that Shankar isn’t happy with Kamal’s prosthetic for Senapathy’s character, sources close to Shankar denied the reports.
Sources from Lyca said that the film has already overshot its budget and cannot finance further. However, the latest we hear is that the film has been shelved due to differences between Kamal and the producer. A source close to production unit told DTNext, “Though no official announcement has been made, Lyca has instructed the team of Indian 2 to drop the film. There is no clarity on whether another production house will take up the film, which was planned to be made at a whopping budget of Rs 300 crore and complete it. An official announcement on Indian 2 will be made by Lyca soon.”
A highly reliable source told DTNext, “Lyca though has committed several projects, and they need to ensure the financial viability of their upcoming releases, especially after Vandha Naan Rajavaa Dhaan Varuven didn’t do too well at the box office. So, that could be one of the reasons why they backed off from Indian 2.”
