Renowned Director Gnanarajasekaran depicts the life story of
the great Indian mathematician Ramanujan who made extraordinary contributions
to mathematical analysis. Ramanujan (Abhinay) was a child prodigy in Maths and
did not show much interest in any other subjects in school days itself.
Anyway he becomes a school topper in school
finals and gets free admission for his college by merit. Even there, his disinterest
in other subject continues and causes embarrassment.
Despite the humiliations, day by day, his affinity towards Maths grows. After completing his degree, he is not able to fetch any job in his hometown or Chennai with this skill in maths. Ramanujan's parents feel that he will settle down in life after marriage so they get him married to Janaki (Bama) but his mother(Suhasini) who believes in astrology keep them both separated.
In the meantime, Ramanujan gets a chance to meet Diwan Bahathur who lives in Chennai with the help of his college lecturer Krishna Rao. Dhiwan being impressed by Ramanujan's work in Maths gets him a job in port trust. In his workplace, one foreigner is impressed by Ramanujan's expertise in Maths. He provides Ramanujan a separate room and encourages him to continue his research. More than that, he suggests him to send his research results abroad to get the right recognition.
Hardy from University of Cambridge recognises Ramanujan's work and invites him to London. There he facilitates for his research but unfortunately Ramanujan's health deteriorates. He develops Tuberculosis and leading a lonely life without his wife makes him depressed. The rest of the story is neatly pictured as well.
Abinay as Ramanujan faces a tough task in his debut itself. Being a grandson of actor Gemini Ganesan, his performance gets appreciated by audience. Nizhalgal Ravi and Suhasini as parents of Ramanujan have done their parts well. Though Suhasini shows her presence in this film after a long gap she scores the appreciation for doing a role which has some shades of grey. The supporting cast has done justice to their respective roles.
The great Indian mathematician's real life is shown with sorrowful and emotional scenes. If the director had cut short the length of the movie, his effort would have reached many. Anyway his effort is to be applauded. Ramesh Vinayagam's music is average while Joseph's camera is a big strength to the film.
This is a family movie to be seen by students as well as parent.
