Kathiresan (Vijay) is a prisoner who escapes from Kolkata to Chennai. He tries to leave to Bangkok with the help of his friend Dhanu (Sathish). When he reaches the airport for his departure he happens to meet Ankitha (Samnatha) and falls for her. He manages to get her mobile number and postpones his trip to know more about her.
The Kolkata police finds out that Kathiresan is in Chennai and tries to catch him. Meanwhile an unknown gang shoots a man who is looking similar to Kathiresan. Seeing this, Kathiresan admits him in the hospital and exchanges his ID with him. Kolkata police mistakes the admitted man to be Kathiresan.
While escaping from the hospital, Kathiresan happens to meet the collector who calls him Jeevanantham. Kathiresan then realizes that the injured man is Jeevanantham. The collector takes him to an old age home and the elders welcome him warmly. The collector then hands over a DD for 25 lakhs which an old man tears up immediately.
The collector then says that he will give the amount within a week and Kathiresan stays in the home itself. In the meantime he is being threatened by businessman Cedric's (Neil Nitin) gang to withdraw all the cases filed against him. If not Cedric promises to kill the elders in the home. Kathiresan unable to understand the reason behind it accepts the demand and gets 5 crores as an advance.
With this advance, Kathiresan plans to leave abroad but at the same time he receives a call from the old age home with a message that he will be given an award and cash prize. He goes there to collect the money and there he is shown a video about Jeevanantham. From that video, Kathiresan comes to know that Jeevanantham fights for the welfare of the agriculturists in Tirunelveli. .After seeing the video Kathiresan changes his mind and decides to fight for the agriculturists. Whether he is successful in rescuing the land or not is the rest of the story.
Vijay is very impressive in both the roles. He has portrayed various emotions with ease and is excellent in his dance as well. Samantha has less scenes to score but makes her fans happy in the dance sequences. Neil Nitin is an apt fit for the role of a businessman.
Anirudh has done so well in the BGM and the songs have become a hit as well. George C Williams should be appreciated for his camera work. Director Murugadoss has done a good job by conveying a clean message about agriculture being the backbone of our country.
