Seventh son is an epic fantasy film which revolves around the adventures of Tom Ward who trains to be a spook.
The period film begins with a knight imprisoning a maliciously evil witch who gets her power through once in a century blood moon.
Mother Malkin, the evil witch who is imprisoned manages to unleash herself.
Few years later Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges) and his apprentice Billy Bradley are summoned to chase off the evil that has possessed a child. Gregory rushes to the spot along with his apprentice Billy Bradley (Kit Harrington) only to realise that the evil is none other than Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore) the witch he had once imprisoned.
Billy gets killed in the process and Master Gregory who is aware that the witch gets her power from the once in a century blood moon is put in a situation where he has to find a new apprentice to fight her agonising evil power.
As the blood moon is about to arrive in a week’s time, Master Gregory trains Tom Ward( (Ben Barnes) to become a spook. Tom lives in a rural farmland and possesses supernatural power which helps him to predict the future. He already knows that Master Gregory will come in search for him but has no clue about the reason.
Tom is given practical instructions on how to handle ghosts, witches by Master Gregory and learns how to be a spook. Whether Tom succeeds in becoming a spook or Master Gregory and Tom were able to fight against the evil witch are narrated in the rest of the story.
The film is adapted from a novel called, ‘The Spook's Apprentice’ written by Joseph Delaney. The visuals, exotic locales and the picturization of the characters are done in an excellent way.
Ben Barnes is appealing as the farmhand Tom. He does a good job in the romantic portions also but the actor fails to impress as a superhero.
The director Sergei Bodrov has tried to render an epic story with the help of utmost technical aspects but as the screenplay is very weak, the way in which the film travels leaves the audience confused.
