‘Wild Card’ is a crime-thriller which features the unexpected incidents that happen in a gambler’s life who live in Las Vegas.
The film directed by Simon West is based on the 1985 novel ‘Heat’ by William Goldman, and is a remake of the 1986 adaptation that starred Burt Reynolds in the lead role.
‘Wild Card’ is all about a gambling addict Nick (Jason Statham) who does odd jobs just to gamble. He is offered a body guard job by millionaire Cyrus (Michael Angarano) and gets paid to support his gambling needs.
One night while having dinner Nick gets a note from Holly (Dominik Garcia-Lorido) asking him to drop in to her house. When Nick meets Holly in her house, Holly tells him that she was brutally gang-raped by three men at the golden nugget and she seeks Nick’s help to find out the culprits and take revenge on them.
Nick decides to help Holly and successfully seizes the culprit who happens to be gangster named Danny (Milo Ventimiglia). Nick attacks Danny’s men and asks Holly to come. After coming to the hotel room, Holly threatens to castrate Danny.
Appalled by this, Danny begs for forgiveness and Holly decides to take 50,000 dollars from Danny and leaves the place. She then splits the money with Nick and leaves Las Vegas.
Nick continues to gamble with the money he has got and luckily makes around 500,000 dollars. In one instance Nick loses all the money he made through gambling and Danny’s men also plan to kill him brutally.
What happens next, whether Nick manages to survive all the ill consequences is shown in the rest of the screenplay.
Jason Statham who plays the lead role, fits perfectly in his character and the film has more violence than the thriller element.
The film which has unexpected twists fails to live up to the audience’s expectations when it comes to making its characters memorable.
