The story of the technically solid film revolves around an astronaut (Matt Damon) who is wrongly presumed dead and left behind on Mars.
Ares III manned mission, sent by NASA to Mars is hit by an intense storm and Matt is assumed to have lost his life. The rest of the crew leaves planet to avoid life threat in the red planet leaving behind Matt.
Fortunately, Matt survives the destruction only to find that he is left alone in a distant planet. All his efforts to communicate with NASA ends up in vain and finally he makes up his mind to grow his own food in the mission’s artificial habitat.
Meanwhile the satellite pictures indicate Matt’s survival to NASA and the situation worsens after a chaotic condition arises about Matt’s rescue operations.
The rest of the film shows whether Matt was brought back to earth and whether he survived the dire consequences in the lonely planet.
