The successful pair of Vemal and Anjali is back in debut director Rajasekar's Mapla Singam, which is a love story between two youngsters belonging to opposite castes, who are always at loggerheads with one another. Will this love story result in peace between the two clans in the village or will it result in things getting worser?
Vemal is in a very familiar zone and delivers what is expected. His look, with the handlebar mustache, is good. Anjali is her typical confident and boisterous self on screen and she doesn't resort to glamour here, unlike some of her recent films. The film has another powerful female character, played by Madhumila.
We have Soori, Kaali Venkat and Adam Greig adding some fun to the film, as the hero's friends. The casting of Adam is a surprise and the director bounces us with this idea. There are a plethora of other support characters played with elan by experienced actors like Radha Ravi, Jayaprakash, Swaminathan and Ramadoss. Mapla Singam is the kind of film where the humor is the USP with the other elements just being par for the course. Quite a few scenes are enjoyable.
A few of the songs act as speed breakers but overall, Mapla Singam is a time-pass rural entertainer which you can put your money on. Despite piracy concerns, Mapla Singam can be expected to do well in the B and C centers.
