Muthina Kathirika sees Sundar C donning the solo lead role's cap after ages and he's back to the genre that made him the successful director that he is today. Venkat Ragavan, who has worked with Sundar C as an assistant director for many films has debuted as a director through this flick.
Starring an ensemble cast of Poonam Bajwa, Kiran, Singampuli, VTV Ganesh, Vaibhav, Sathish, Ravi Mariya and others, Siddharth Vipin has crooned the tracks and Banu Murugan has handled the lens for Muthina Kathirika. The film is bankrolled by Sundar C's home banner Avni Movies and distributed by Sri Thenandal Films.
Muthina Kathirika is the story of Sundar C who is from a family that has tried and failed to make a mark in politics for generations. Even though his mother attempts to make sure he doesn't choose the same profession, fate get Sundar C to politics where he faces two opposition parties. These two parties have Singampuli and VTV Ganesh in it and though they're brothers, they've always stood against each other. When the figure out Sundar C to be a common threat, they forget the animosity between them and come together against him.
Sundar C, on the other hand, falls in love with Poonam who happens to be the daughter of his college mate which makes her father angry. If he wins the election and the girl of his dreams forms the rest of the story of this flick.
It's a welcoming change to see Sundar C in a character that suits him and fits his age when compared to his previous lead roles. Sathish, who travels alongside him the entire time, makes fun of his age and Sundar C deserves appreciation for it. The look of a politician fits him like a glove and one can imagine how he would've carried out his role considering that he's one of the best directors for comedy in Tamil cinema.
Singampuli and VTV Ganesh have given a good performance that has antagonism coupled with humour. Sathish's appearance and one liners are a treat to watch. Poonam Bajwa looks beautiful and even though her costume in the film is predominantly sarees, she has added a considerable amount of glamour to her role. Yogi Babu, Ravi Mariya and Vaibhav's role are neat. Kiran, as the heroine's mother is seen in very few scenes that she has done aptly.
The stables that has given us Venkat Ragavan makes it unsurprising that he has chosen a comedy flick as his launchpad. Even though this flick is a remake of the Malayalam film Vellimoonga, they've tweaked it to suit the Tamil audience really well. Siddharth Vipin's songs are decent and he has done a better job with the background score which fits aptly to the film's tone. Banu Murugan has played well with his camera skills and the film looks colourful and vibrant.
Overall, Muthina Kathirika won't disappoint if you expect nothing more than an entertaining laugh riot.
