Oru Mugathirai's plot primarily revolves around the heroines Aditi Acharya and Shruti, who are medical students specializing in psychiatry. The two frequently get into fights with each other. In the meantime, Aditi is addicted to Facebook and interacts with a boy named Rohit. She gets close with him and shares many personal details with him. A difference of opinion leads to a fight between Aditi and Shruti with the issue taking a serious turn before falling under the scanner of the college's principal. Realizing that the two are at loggerheads and no peace will come between them, he decides to set a competition for the two.
In the meantime, the college management has been trying to bring renowned doctor Rahman to conduct a special lecture for the students. However, he keeps turning down their requests. Next, Shruti and Aditi are given the task to bring Rahman to the college for the lecture by the college management. When they do go approach Rahman, Aditi seeks the help of Rohit. However, they are unable to bring Rahman to the college. Their disappointment soon turns to a joyous surprise when Rahman is seen in their college on the said date. He reveals that it was because Aditi's friend Rohit had requested him to come there. In the one week that he teaches the students there, he pacifies the relationship between Aditi and Shruti.
After they complete their college, Shruti and Aditi return to their homes. However, it is revealed later that Aditi never returned home and is headed to Chennai to meet Rohit. But, Rohit says he doesn't want to meet her and that is when Rahman takes her to his home and allows her to stay there. On the other hand, the film's hero Suresh is working in a leading IT company. Love blossoms between him and a new joinee named Devika in his company. However, Devika dumps him once she joins a new company. As a result, Suresh becomes a drug addict. At the same time, he decides to seek medical and rehabilitation help from Rahman.
It is at this point when Aditi comes to realize that he has been lying to her under the guise of Rohit. She also learns that he had intentionally made her come all the way to Chennai. Upon realizing that his act has been busted, Rahman decides to kill Aditi, but pressures Suresh to commit the crime. In the end, whether Aditi escapes Rahman and why he made her come to Chennai forms the rest of the crux of Oru Mugathirai.
Rahman has once performed his part as required per the story's demands. Compared to his last few films in which he has been seen mainly as a cop, he excels this time in the role of psychiatrist. Suresh, who comes as the hero has done his job well playing the romantic. Shruti looks gorgeous and delights fans with her performance; especially when she fights with Aditi. Devika is beautiful yet wild. She makes us hate her for the reason she decides to leave Suresh and that is the true calling for a performer - to convince us to make them like or hate them with their antics. Although Balaji and Swamithan come in as the comedic relief, they do not provide many laughs.
Director Senthil Nadan has tried to make a film that showcases the wrong implications of social media and how young girls get entrapped in the schemes of a certain few ill-doers in the society. Although the screenplay is good, the way the film has been is rather slow and lacks the punch for a satisfying watch. Cinematographer Saravana Pandian's skills add the strength for the film. The background score deserves compliments.
In short, Oru Mugathirai is a drag.
