There are two major narratives in the movie. One of it revolves around Bharathirajaa, an elderly head of the family in Tanjoren and a loyal worker for PL Thenappan, who is a mill owner and a smuggler. While the other narrative revolves around Bharathirajaa's son Vidharth, who lives in Chennai and works as an on-call driver at a taxi company.
Initially the family goes to talk marriage alliance for Vidharth with Delna Davis. But unfortunately the girl's father rejects the offer, and ends up insulting Bharathirajaa for working with Thenappan. This aggravates Vidharth as he and everyone else in the family kept telling him to stop working for the smuggler.
Despite his family's disapproval he continues to stay loyal to Thenappan as he helped him settle in life when everyone else saw him as a curse. So, when he chooses Bharathirajaa on a mission to handover a stolen idol worth five crores to Elango Kumaravel, an agent in Chennai, he readily accepts it. Thenappan hands over the idol in a travelling bag which has an image of a monkey (Kurangu Bommai).
After Bharathirajaa reaches Chennai, in a twist of events, the bag ends up in the hands of Vidharth. Who at that time was unaware of the fact that his father is in the same city. Meanwhile Kumaravel plots to cheat Thenappan out of the money he is owed to pay in return for the idol, by using Bharathirajaa as the scapegoat. The rest of the plot revolves around; How Vidharth gets rid of the bag and how he saves his his dad, while Thennapan wonders about his missing loyalite and money, unaware about Kumaravel's plan.
Every character has done a phenomenal acting, even the minor roles. Once again Vidharth has proven that he chooses scripts that has an impact, than heroism. Though he is the protagonist of the movie, Bharathirajaa scored the film by his exceptional acting as a naive, loyal old man. While Elango Kumaravel is usually seen in positive characters, in Kurangu Bommai he is shown as a cunning man is revolutionary. But as usual he has done a good job. Meanwhile P L Thenappan, who is a reknowed producer has also done a perfect justice to his role.
Kurangu Bombai is the debut film for director Nithilan Swaminathan, fame of a popular television show Naalaya Iyakkunar. Though the movie lacked technicality sometimes, and gets a little cinematic towards the climax, the screen play and direction keeps us hooked to the movie from the start. It seems like the director has joined the club as one of the most promising and upcoming directors.
Music director Ajaneesh Loknath's back ground score is on point and strengthens the movie's plot at important moments. While NS Udhayakumar's cinematography skills come to the fore and has provided us with impressive shots.
In short, Kurangu Bommai is a well delivered crime thriller.
