Vijay Sethupathi is a carefree young man who drinks a lot and roams around the village with his best buddy Singam Puli. Tanya is the sister of Pasupathy, and through his wife, Bobby Simha ends up as his brother-in-law. Though Vijay Sethupathi is irresponsible, he has all the courage and strength to tame a ragging bull.
On one such day, Pasupathy challenges Sethupathi to tame his bull, which he does, and as a reward he vows to give Tanya's hand for marriage. Sethupathi initially doesn't show interest about this alliance or on her. But, immediately falls for her the moment he lays his eyes on Tanya, and she in return accepts him to be her husband, hence, he also decides to wed her. They develop a strong love between them only after their marriage.
Meanwhile, Bobby Simha for a long time, lusts after Tanya, and insists his sister to talk to her husband Pasupathy into getting him married to Tanya, but since, that doesn't happen, Bobby Simha gets egoistic and vengeful and plots various ways to separate Vijay Sethupathi from Tanya and then attain her.
As usual Vijay Sethupathi has pulled off his character effortlessly. His down-to-earth and casual acting is what attracts people, especially his screen presence is amazing. Tanya has done a beautiful job, and her performance in this film will sure get her more roles. Bobby Simha has pulled of his role as a baddie well, but his role could have been much heavier. Pasupathi, Singam Puli and Sharath Lohitashwa, have done justice in playing their parts neatly.
Director Panneerselvam, has done a pretty decent job in the directorial department. As the film is set in a rural background, he could have given a more interesting screenplay than the usual drama we have seen multiple times. Hence the movie has nothing new to offer, but has the elements that all village-centric films have.
KA Sakthivel's cinematography skills come to the fore an he has shot well, with D Imman handling the music department, while his songs were mediocre, he has done justice to the background score.
In short, Karuppan, is a family drama.
