Set in the early 1960's, Nadigaiyar Thilagam is based on the the life of the legendary actress Savitri. Her role is reprised by Keerthy Suresh, while Dulquer Salmaan plays as Gemini Ganeshan, a famous actor who was the reason for Savitri's rise and fall.
Keerthy Suresh is a free-spirited girl, who is also ambitious when it comes to reaching heights. She leads a difficult life during her youth, yet undeterred she strives to make the maximum out of her life. She befriends Dulquer Salmaan and soon falls for him too.
A picture taken by Dulquer spreads to the people of media, and she gets a chance to act. She accepts the offer, faces a great deal of difficulties, but achieves all the fame and success. The rest of the movie dwells more about the kind of life Keerthy Suresh lived and died. All of this is discovered and narrated through investigative journalists Samantha and Vijay Deverakonda.
Previously when the makers of the film roped in Keerthy to reprise the role of Savitri, the news was not well received by a certain section of the media. But now, she has done a fantastic job, rendering all the viewers speechless. Especially during the climax. Kudos to her. Likewise, Dulquer Salmaan's performance rivals to what Gemini Ganeshan has done. The versatile actor has pulled of his character really well. Portraying him as the legendary actor was an absolutely good idea.
Samantha and Vijay Deverakonda have given a decent performance. Their on-screen chemistry is appealing. Other actors like, Shalini Pandey, Malavika Nair, Mohan Babu and Radhakrishna Jagarlamudi have done justice in playing their parts neatly.
Making a biopic based on the life of a legendary actress is not easy. Yet, Nag Ashwin has done an amazing job at the directorial department. He has succeeded in recreating the early 1960's and filling the elder viewers with a wave of nostalgia. Even though the film drags at places, his screenplay is well researched and written. Also, the casting of characters are on point.
A special mention has to be given to the art director Kolla Avinash and production designer Shivam Rao for the mind blowing sets. Dani Sanchez-Lopez's cinematography skills come to the fore and he has done a brilliant job. Likewise, Mickey J Meyer's background scores and melodious songs are pleasant to hear.
In short, Nadigaiyar Thilagam is a must watch.
